Should
young people be allowed to be pop stars?
With ever increasing reality
television programmes such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor', there is
certainly more opportunity for young people to enter the limelight and have the
opportunity to become a pop star. However, there is much debate as to whether
it is healthy for people to enter the pressured world of stardom at such a
young age. So the question is 'should children be allowed to be pop stars?'
Many people would agree that young people should have the opportunity to
showcase their talents to a broader audience. These talents include singing,
dancing and playing musical instruments which young people should be rightly
proud of. The experience of performing to a large audience is a very rewarding
experience; it helps to boost the confidence of the performer. In addition
to this, watching young people with such talent can be very inspirational for
other young people watching the television shows. This could therefore
encourage more young people to become involved in performing arts.
On the other hand, taking part in
programmes such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor' does come with its own
pressures. By taking part, young people are placing themselves in a vulnerable
position where they could be openly criticised on national television. If they
are judged in a negative way, this could be detrimental to their self-esteem
and could have long lasting consequences on their confidence. Moreover, if
young people are successful in their pursuit of becoming a pop star in shows
such as these, they will then be thrown into the world of stardom which they
may not be prepared for or may find hard to cope with. The media today puts so
much pressure on stars to look and act a certain way which could be unhealthy
for such young minds.
In conclusion, there are many valid points to support both sides of the
argument as to whether young people should be allowed to become pop stars.
Certainly, young people should have the opportunity to perform and be proud of
their talents but some of the pressures they face are concerning. Which leads
to the point, should there be a separate programme to celebrate young people’s
talents as opposed to those such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor'?
This is definitely a level 5 piece of work. It has precise use of vocabulary, paragraphs and grammar
