Can you identify Level 5 writing?

Can you identify Level 5 writing?

In literacy, some of you have been looking at examples of level 5 writing and using it as a model for your own writing. I would like you to read the following discussion text and tell me what you think makes it a level 5 piece of writing.

Think about the following:
  • The opening and ending
  • Vocabulary choices
  • Paragraphs
  • Sentence structures
  • Punctuation and grammar

Should young people be allowed to be pop stars?

With ever increasing reality television programmes such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor', there is certainly more opportunity for young people to enter the limelight and have the opportunity to become a pop star. However, there is much debate as to whether it is healthy for people to enter the pressured world of stardom at such a young age. So the question is 'should children be allowed to be pop stars?'

Many people would agree that young people should have the opportunity to showcase their talents to a broader audience. These talents include singing, dancing and playing musical instruments which young people should be rightly proud of. The experience of performing to a large audience is a very rewarding experience; it helps to boost the confidence of the performer. In addition to this, watching young people with such talent can be very inspirational for other young people watching the television shows. This could therefore encourage more young people to become involved in performing arts.

On the other hand, taking part in programmes such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor' does come with its own pressures. By taking part, young people are placing themselves in a vulnerable position where they could be openly criticised on national television. If they are judged in a negative way, this could be detrimental to their self-esteem and could have long lasting consequences on their confidence. Moreover, if young people are successful in their pursuit of becoming a pop star in shows such as these, they will then be thrown into the world of stardom which they may not be prepared for or may find hard to cope with. The media today puts so much pressure on stars to look and act a certain way which could be unhealthy for such young minds.

In conclusion, there are many valid points to support both sides of the argument as to whether young people should be allowed to become pop stars. Certainly, young people should have the opportunity to perform and be proud of their talents but some of the pressures they face are concerning. Which leads to the point, should there be a separate programme to celebrate young people’s talents as opposed to those such as 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'X Factor'?

THE RAGING SEA

A blanket of diamonds dancing gently in the sun, like ballerina, Glistering like a million of sapphire, She twirls like thousands of tiny tornados, Slowly stretching her enchanting wings.

A twisted tongue in the beautiful sky, while the wave jump up with a glittering glow, Splashing she quickly clashes against the defenceless rocks, Rising like a flame, she grows furious.

Bang! Like a vicious viper she strikes, slamming her fist in fury, she devours her prey like a hungry hunter, Invincible and ravenous, she storms off, destroying everything in her way…. She’s the savage sea.

Mighty Mountain

Mighty mountain sleeping tranquilly

Peaceful as dove dormant in its nest

A blanket of diamonds keeping it warm

Peaceful paradise

Yawning loudly, awaking rom its deep sleep

Mighty mountain rumbling and trembling

Firing rocks hitting the earth

Steaming like a car

Whiffling loudly waking the trees

Livid Volcano is a grumbling giant

Destroyed everything in its path

Steaming like vicious lion

Demands awake firing rocks

Accelerate waiting for some food

Judgment day has arrived

Way Home

As the boy called Shane pours milk into the metallic bowl, the cat with no name purrs with satisfaction. “Enjoy your milk, Skinny Minny. When you finish, we will have to go to sleep,” whispers Shane, as he gives his cat its milk. The boy, who is exhausted from his hard-working day, falls asleep straight away.

In the middle of the night, Shane wakes up in confusion, listening to the loud noises.

“Did you hear that, Catlegs?” muttered Shane. Spitfire sits up looking petrified. Perplexed, Shane looks around his den cautiously.

Apprehensively, Shane steps out of bed and creeps out of his den to discover where the noises are coming from. Suddenly, dark shadows approached and came closer and closer to Shane…

Filled with terror, the boy called Shane stands as till as a statue. Menacingly, they stand in front of the timid boy called Shane, wearing dull, black hoods.

“Well, well, well. Look who we’ve found!” sneered one of the boys wearing black hoods. Instantly, Shane heard the voice and now knows exactly who they are. It is the gang!

As soon as they stepped forward, Shane sprinted, with the cat tucked underneath his arm, to the busy street. Looking around for the gang, Shane ran to a corner to be out of the gang’s sight. Eventually, the gang spotted Shane and started to shout,

“Are you too afraid? Carry on running but you will never get away!” Those words started to race around Shane’s mind, while his heart is beating fast, faster and faster until he meets a friend down another road.

“Hi, my name is Jake, what’s yours?” asked a little voice. Shane replied,

“I’m Shane, nice to meet you.”

Shane and Jake sit on the ledge of a house and Shane tells Jake his life-story. Jake, who is friendly, listens to Shane and tries to persuade him to go back to his real home. Bestcat struggles to sit on the ledge so Shane helps him up.

“What should I do?” questioned Shane.

The boy called Shane walks down a quiet road, thinking of his friend’s words. Thinking so hard, Shane decides to go back to his cardboard box but on the way, he sees both of his parents.

“Mum, Dad what are you doing here?” Shane asked. “We have been shopping, we’ve missed you so much! We are so glad you are safe,” Shanes Mum replied. “Have you stopped arguing?” Shane asked. “Yes we have, we want you to come home,” his parents pleaded. “Really?” questioned Shane. “Yes, we would like it if you do,” replied his Dad.

His parents are grief-stricken. They also ask if Shane is well and they apologise about their arguing. Shane tells his parents, who are now generous and loving, all about the gang and his minute cat. Shane’s parents admitted,

“We were acting like children but we promise that we will never ever do that again.” They gave Shane advice about the gang and let their beloved Shane keep his cat.

After an exhausting day, Shane falls asleep straight away, feeling loved in his comfortable bed.

Way Home

Thud, thud, thud. Goes the terror-stricken boy called Shane’s heart. Fast as lightening the boy runs while a intend, old nasty gang chase him. He is petrified! Quick as he could Shane gets up and runs as fast as he could towards his den.

“Don’t worry Best Cat we will be okay.” For a minute Shane thought. Then he runs the opposite direction towards the huge shopping centre. Quick as a flash he runs into the shop and hid. Suddenly, the boy called Shane bumped into a dark figure…

The black figure looked at Shane in amazement. Shane was confused!

“Is that really you?” Shane glances at her baffled. Few minutes later the mean gang members runs into the shop. They push Shane to the floor and ask for their money back that Shane had stolen from them.

“Give me my money back NOW!”
“Where is it, NOW?” The gang members scream into Shanes the same thing about their money. Shane, who is terrified, starts crying.
“Leave the poor boy alone!” shouts a lady from the crowd.
“Here you go you unpleasant people,” while the lady gives their money back.
“Thanks” Shane said IN PLEASURE.
“No worries Shane and yes it is me mum!” Shane and his mum embraced.
“Speaking of which Shane would you like and with us like you used to before?”

“Of course I would MUM!” Shane screamed in joy. Shane and his mum walked along the streets of New York that cold, dark night.

Finally, they got home in pleasure and excitement. The enter the lovely house, Never ever has Shane felt this amazement his life. Not in years has Shane been in a house. That day Shane went to sleep immediately after his mum showed him to his bedroom.

The next morning Shane woke up. He looked around. He’s heart falls into hoy as he gets out of bed. There on the table was a plate with some fantastic pancakes with a mug of warm milk in it. Shane’s mum looked at him.

“Here you go Shane breakfast is ready.” Shane bounced on the chair and munches up his mouthful of pancakes.

“Mum I have not had such yummy pancakes in a long time!” Shane says in delight.

A few days later, just as Shane is getting into bed he hears a loud shout from downstairs.

“Why are you screaming mum and dad?” Shane says from his bedroom.
“Mum and Dad I can’t stand you screaming and arguing and that was why I left the first time, that is it I am going from here to my den that I’ve lived before in my den!”
“No please don’t go darling, we’re sorry we won’t do it again we promise!
“NO I’m going, BYE!” Shane screamed into his families face. He slammed the door. He walked down the streets of New York not knowing where he was going. Suddenly, he bumped into a boy. Shane looked up and realized it was is friend.
“I’m sorry, “he politely said to the boy.
It’s okay Shane,” he replied to Shane.

Shane was amazed that his friend remembered him from when they were kids. They got up started walking. As Shane and his old buddy walked down the streets of New York…
