Husna's work,

Way Home

As the boy called Shane pours milk into the metallic bowl, the cat with no name purrs with satisfaction. “Enjoy your milk, Skinny Minny. When you finish, we will have to go to sleep,” whispers Shane, as he gives his cat its milk. The boy, who is exhausted from his hard-working day, falls asleep straight away.

In the middle of the night, Shane wakes up in confusion, listening to the loud noises.

“Did you hear that, Catlegs?” muttered Shane. Spitfire sits up looking petrified. Perplexed, Shane looks around his den cautiously.

Apprehensively, Shane steps out of bed and creeps out of his den to discover where the noises are coming from. Suddenly, dark shadows approached and came closer and closer to Shane…

Filled with terror, the boy called Shane stands as till as a statue. Menacingly, they stand in front of the timid boy called Shane, wearing dull, black hoods.

“Well, well, well. Look who we’ve found!” sneered one of the boys wearing black hoods. Instantly, Shane heard the voice and now knows exactly who they are. It is the gang!

As soon as they stepped forward, Shane sprinted, with the cat tucked underneath his arm, to the busy street. Looking around for the gang, Shane ran to a corner to be out of the gang’s sight. Eventually, the gang spotted Shane and started to shout,

“Are you too afraid? Carry on running but you will never get away!” Those words started to race around Shane’s mind, while his heart is beating fast, faster and faster until he meets a friend down another road.

“Hi, my name is Jake, what’s yours?” asked a little voice. Shane replied,

“I’m Shane, nice to meet you.”

Shane and Jake sit on the ledge of a house and Shane tells Jake his life-story. Jake, who is friendly, listens to Shane and tries to persuade him to go back to his real home. Bestcat struggles to sit on the ledge so Shane helps him up.

“What should I do?” questioned Shane.

The boy called Shane walks down a quiet road, thinking of his friend’s words. Thinking so hard, Shane decides to go back to his cardboard box but on the way, he sees both of his parents.

“Mum, Dad what are you doing here?” Shane asked. “We have been shopping, we’ve missed you so much! We are so glad you are safe,” Shanes Mum replied. “Have you stopped arguing?” Shane asked. “Yes we have, we want you to come home,” his parents pleaded. “Really?” questioned Shane. “Yes, we would like it if you do,” replied his Dad.

His parents are grief-stricken. They also ask if Shane is well and they apologise about their arguing. Shane tells his parents, who are now generous and loving, all about the gang and his minute cat. Shane’s parents admitted,

“We were acting like children but we promise that we will never ever do that again.” They gave Shane advice about the gang and let their beloved Shane keep his cat.

After an exhausting day, Shane falls asleep straight away, feeling loved in his comfortable bed.
